I’ve been hunting since I was 12 years old, that’s about 46 years ago. What started out with home made bows, slingshots, and even the right shaped and weight rock, has continued to evolve into a life long passion. My equipment has improved a little, but my love of the woods, respect for the wildlife, and passion for the hunt are all greater than they have ever been. The ingredients to a good hunter is knowledge and sweat. I continue to learn something every time I’m in the woods and from others I talk to. My joy is in the hunt and developing the knowledge, skill, and not the kill.
Growing up in the outskirts of Auburn in a time when most people didn’t have much, the outdoors provide us with a round the clock world of recreation and entertainment that was free. My friends and I were outdoors from daylight to dark creating our own magic adventures, has become a passion that has stayed with me throughout my adult life.
I took up bowhunting when the state began the expanded zone seasons. Prior to that, I never wanted to use my rifle tag up by shooting a deer with a bow. The expanded season was a Godsend that allowed me to enjoy my passion from September to December rather than just a month in November. I’ve shot many deer and several bear with a bow and the feeling of accomplishment has been far more rewarding than the same game I’ve taken with a firearm. The knowledge and skill required to accomplish these hunts with a bow are far greater and as a result, provide me far more enjoyment. As I have said before, it’s the knowledge and skill I am developing that makes the hunt so meaningful to me, not the number of kills I make.
